There is video that implies that multiple panels can be shown and hidden selectively, allowing them to occupy the same space and not be present at the same time. Unfortunately I haven't been able to determine how this can be accomplished. I'm hoping it's not something that only works with a 3D model and also is not something based on flipping between screens.
Any ideas on this?

It is done via Toggle Buttons. You can select in the Toggle Button options to create a linked panel.
